Ben Swofford is an Assistant Reference Librarian at Thompson Coburn.
What’s your favorite part of your job?
The research. Definitely the research. Being given a question or research project then diving in and trying to answer/solve what they need. The best part is finding that elusive document you have been searching for. It gives you a sense of accomplishment.
When you look toward the future of libraries, what are you most excited about?
I think it is the unknown aspect of it. The possibilities seem limitless. I think there is definitely a place for us in the future and that we will have a large part in defining that place. Technologies are only going to become more ubiquitous and it is up to us create a role in the new digital environment.
What has been your favorite SLA event?
I think the happy hours have been useful. It gives me a good chance to meet other librarians around the city. Since I do the ILL at our firm it’s nice to have a personal relationship at the different libraries.
What SLA event are you most looking forward to this year?
The Christmas party. I have never been and hear it’s a hoot.
What book(s) are you currently reading?
Victus: The Fall of Barcelona. When on vacation last year in Barcelona it was everywhere and everyone was reading it. But it had not been translated into English. Then last week at my local SLPL branch it was on the New Books shelf. So I snatched it.
What’s your favorite metro St. Louis area restaurant/food/landmark?
Pizza-A-Go-Go. Everyone has their favorite pizza joint, but I am partial to this one. Nothing on the menu but pizza and you can BYOB.
Lastly, how can people connect with you?
You can find me on LinkedIn and Facebook, but I don’t tweet.
