Responsiblities:
Library & Information Services
- Participate in circulation and reference desk services
- Monitor the US book market for works translated from the German to develop library’s English-language collection
- Perform both original and copy cataloging of German and English-language media
- Help develop material to market the library
Translation Grant Program
- Organize and implement two translator prizes annually, including budget planning and monitoring as well as reporting
- Act as US liaison for the Goethe-Institut’s translation grant program
- Consult US publishers on advisability of translation initiatives
- Process submitted translation grant applications
- Conceive, organize and execute cultural programs and events relating to translated literature
- Represent the Goethe-Institut at editorial meetings for ‘New Books in German’ publication
Content Management
- Develop concepts and realize editorial work for the journalistic internet offerings of the Goethe-Institut USA
- Collaborate on determining themes and coordinate with the Goethe-Instituts in the USA, the Goethe-Institut headquarters, authors, bloggers and artists
- Edit text and images (print and online), oversee translations into both German and English, enter data into the content management system
- Develop online cooperations and marketing campaigns
Requirements:
- Existing US work permit
- Masters of Library and Information Science and/or many years of professional experience in a comparable capacity
- Native-level command of both German and English
- Solid knowledge of German culture and society with special emphasis on contemporary literature
- Ability to identify and communicate relevant, current and bilateral topics
- Work experience in an online editorial department
- Proven practical experience and significant expertise in social media
- Excellent command of MS Office applications, image editing, content management systems
- High capacity for teamwork
- Willingness to work evenings and/or weekends
