Archivist Mudd Library (Term Position), Princeton, NJ

Princeton University Library seeks an archives professional to assist with the return of the entirety of Mudd Library’s archival collections (approximately 35,000 linear feet) to their new locations in the Library following a building-wide renovation, and to provide support for additional Library functions that were impacted by the renovation.

This is a one year term position. 

Primary Responsibilities:  

  • providing on-site and virtual support throughout the collections move, scheduled to begin in early 2021, ensuring that the movers are placing collections properly within a new locations scheme and updating metadata in locations management systems.
  • supporting the Collections Coordinator in managing the Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Program, with a special focus on the 2021 senior thesis cycle and dissertations delivered for the May, September, and November degree dates
  • managing the influx of new University Archives accessions while working with the Special Collections Archival Description and Processing Team to prioritize and begin to address the processing backlog.
  • conducting restriction review and reference services to support Mudd Library’s Public Services staff, university administration, and researchers.
  • The Term Archivist reports to, and works under the guidance of, the Collections Coordinator.

Essential Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience. 
  • Familiarity with collections management strategy in regards to locations management and management of location metadata.
  • Direct experience with a large-scale collections move.
  • Hands-on archival processing experience with collections varying in size and scope.
  • Experience with collection management tools such as Archivists' Toolkit and ArchivesSpace, or similar system.Familiarity with current developments in processing procedures.
  • Application of standards for manuscript and archival description such as DACS, EAD, and MARC and facility with managing the resulting descriptive data.
  • Experience providing reference services in a special collections library.
  • Experience assessing restriction requirements for archival collections.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team setting.
  • Ability to work effectively with public services staff and researchers.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree from an ALA-accredited program.
  • Experience creating wayfinding tools to facilitate retrieval of collections from stacks spaces.
  • Knowledge of procedures for accessioning and describing born-digital materials and audiovisual media, and understanding of related preservation concerns.
  • Experience with XSLT, XQuery or other such computing tools to the management of archival descriptive data.
  • Familiarity with electronic thesis and dissertation practices.
