Hi Everyone -
Please join us via webinar for our next free Department of the Interior Library Park Ranger Speaker Series lecture, entitled "A Fitting Tribute: Remembrances of the First President along the George Washington Memorial Parkway" on Tuesday, February 15th from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm ET.
Immediately following George Washington's death in 1799, the American people began to find ways to memorialize the man who was remembered as "First in War, First in Peace, and First in the Hearts of His Countrymen." While his largest memorial (the Washington Monument) stands tall in the middle of the city named for him, just across the Potomac River in Virginia are some interesting, but lesser known, memorials to Washington. In this presentation, Mark Maloy, Visual Information Specialist with the George Washington Memorial Parkway, will explore the history of the roadway that was created to honor Washington and other memorials to Washington managed by the park, including the first memorial built to honor him: Arlington House.
