Hello all! My name is Lauren and I am currently a MLIS student with San Jose State University as well as an asset specialist intern with Walt Disney Imagineering. I am currently taking a course in Special Librarianship and a course requirement is to complete a field project totaling 20-25 hours of volunteer time by August 5th. I was curious if anyone might know of any remote volunteer positions available? Any information or assistance would be much appreciated!

    Hi Lauren,

I am the librarian and archivist for Carnegie Observatories in Pasadena, CA. I have a project for which I would very much like assistance and almost all of the work can be done remotely.

Carnegie Observatories was the home of many famous astronomers (including Edwin Hubble) and a lot of truly groundbreaking science (such as the discovery that the rest of the universe not only exists outside the Milky Way but is actually moving away from us) was done here in the early and mid 1900s. However, while much of that work was made possible by the female Research Assistants -- our version of Harvard's "Computers" -- who worked here, their contributions to that science was severely downplayed and often unmentioned in most of the published papers at the time. The only references we really have to them are in Carnegie's annual yearbooks. I have started a reference guide for mentions of the work done by these Research Assistants, but I could use some help in reviewing more of the yearbooks and searching for additional information about or mentions of these women outside of Carnegie. All of our yearbooks have been scanned and are searchable and follow-up research can be done online. If this is a project that interests you, please let me know. My email is kwhitten@carnegiescience.edu

    Best,
