    SLA-SCC Post-Conference Wrap-Up Wednesday May 24, 2023 @7-9pm PT

Join the SLA-SCC on Zoom for our post-conference wrap up, just a few days after the upcoming SLA Conference in Detroit. We will have members and any other guests there to share what they saw, heard, and learned at the conference. It's a great chance to catch up with colleagues and meet new people. If you aren't able to attend the SLA Conference in Detroit, then this will be a great time to hear the highlights of what happened. It's also a chance to stay up to date on what is happening in the library and information science world.

The wrap-up will be casual and informal, where people can share their conference experiences, ask questions, and listen.

Anyone is invited to attend, members and non-members.

I registered but not sure I'll make it.  My takeaways:

There's still a desire for in-person gatherings but they don't need to be as large as past conferences at convention centers.  A hotel would be fine.  Cheaper registration would be great.  We'd like there to still be a single unified gathering for all of us so we can gather together despite subject specialties and geographies.

Vendor support/vendor activities matter.  My company is more willing to fund me to meet with our vendors than to pay for my professional development so I need the vendors to come.  There needs to be ROI for them to come.  Past years, Engineering had a breakfast where we celebrated awardees who received awards sponsored by our vendors.  We couldn't do that this year.  Turns out these sponsorships and visibility at events were important to the vendors.

The joint effort with MLA was a mixed bag. I attended some of the Collection Symposium sessions which were good, but the SLA sessions felt like an afterthought [added: scheduling times/program listing was an afterthought; SLA content was good].  While I understand the challenges with the short timeline for adding SLA into the mix, it felt awkward.  Lessons learned ....

The after party to the IT Dance Party was a blast.  Shout out to Heather Kotula for throwing that together from the dance floor and getting us to Checkers Bar.  Detroit has some good karaoke singers; not sure they'd say the same about us but we all had fun. :)

Hope everyone else that attended, either in person or virtually, had a good conference and hope it wasn't our last.

Thanks, Stephanie! It was fun. I think the non librarians at the bar enjoyed it too. And thanks to everyone for the "bah bah bah"! It was really thanks to Tony for finding Checker Bar. I just grabbed the microphone!

For an event next year – standalone SLA event – start thinking about a university setting. Hotels are still pretty expensive with food and beverage minimums and AV costs. There may or may not be someone(s) working on such an idea.

I agree with everything else you said. I talked to a lot of vendors and they are very interested in supporting SLA moving forward. I had a conversation just last night about the SLA audience being hard to reach (from vendor perspective) so vendors really want to see us gather.

I feel like SLAers need 2 things:

    1. A place to gather
    2. A good program so that employers will support attending the event

Everything else is, well, everything else. Live bands? Ribbon cutting ceremonies? Cake and champagne? Tote bags? I have plenty of those!

    Just my thoughts.
