September's Education Division webinar featured Derek, Johnson: an outreach specialist with the National Network of Libraries of Medicine (NNLM), Derek conducts training and outreach to health professionals and librarians on a variety of topics focusing on health information access. Derek has previously facilitated web-based trainings on multilingual and multicultural health information and presented on topics including health equity, health disparities, and population health. Prior to his role with NNLM, Derek worked as a consultant conducting competitive intelligence research within the health and wellness industry and as a prospect researcher with the University of Minnesota Foundation. Derek holds a bachelor’s in economics from St. John’s University (MN) and is a Beta Phi Mu graduate of St. Catherine University’s Master in Library and Information Science program.

His topic was "From Beyond our Borders: Providing Health Information Outreach to Immigrant and Refugee Populations"

Session Description:

As a home to more than 43 million immigrants and 3 million refugees, the United States serves as a country of many races, classes, ethnicities and abilities. For individuals whose native language is not English, or who have recently relocated to the United States, many barriers exist in adjusting to a new country. Cultural differences, low literacy levels, language, and healthcare are just some of the challenges these individuals must overcome. This session will provide attendees with background information on immigrant and refugee populations within the U.S. Examples will be provided of how libraries have extended outreach and educational activities to reach these population groups and the importance of cultural competence and humility in engaging in cross-cultural communication.

Learning Objectives:

• Describe the current population of immigrants, refugees, and Asylees in the United States

• Define culture, cultural competence, and cultural humility

• Identify three free online resources that can be used to enhance cross-cultural communication
