Please join SLA Georgia and presenter Rob Sarwark, Knowledge Management Specialist, Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta for his talk "Bibliography of the Damned." This will be a journey through the Catholic Index of Forbidden Books, also known as the Index Librorum Prohibitorum in Latin. The Index was active as a means of censoring reading and publishing from about 1564 until 1966, when it was disbanded in the wake of the Second Vatican Council and its many ecumenical reforms.“Bibliography of the Damned” began as a research paper towards Sarwark’s MLIS degree but has developed into a blog and, with the support of the aforementioned fellowship, a manuscript in current development. The project seeks to elucidate the Catholic Index of Forbidden Books throughout its 400-year existence (c.1560-1966) through a lens of critical bibliography as well as a humanization of all players involved (authors, publishers, censors, etc.). This analysis includes drawing parallels between the historical phenomena and the issues of censorship, access, and literacy endemic to the present Digital Age.Robert M. Sarwark is currently a knowledge management specialist at the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta and was a 2018-2019 Houghton Mifflin Visiting Fellow at Harvard University’s Houghton Rare Book and Manuscript Library. He holds a Masters in Portuguese and Brazilian Studies from Brown University as well as a Masters in Library and Information Science from the University of Illinois.
