The SLA Illinois Board of Directors met recently and decided to expand its thinking on who might be able to fill board positions for 2023.

Do you fit in one or more of the categories below? We want to invite you to join us!

    • Retired - We welcome any retirees who might want to continue participating in professional association work.
    • Not currently working in a library - If you're between jobs or working in a different field, the SLA Illinois board would like to offer you an opportunity to stay connected to specialized libraries.
    • Students or new professionals - We would love to have a recently-graduated person or someone who is still taking MLIS/MLS classes join our board. This could create better connections with student communities, one of our goals for 2023!
    • Live in a different state, but work in Illinois - Do you work remotely for an Illinois organization? Perfect! You've got a connection! We would love to have your opinion on what might be interesting to our members.
    • Not currently living or working in Illinois - Not based regionally? That's okay! Even with the smallest connection to our state or region (i.e. "I visited once"), we would love to have you on our board. Since most of our events are virtual, your participation would bring new ideas and a breath of fresh air.

The only requirements that we ask are that you:

    • Bring a willingness to share and learn
    • Are willing to join SLA Illinois before January 1, 2023 (free, as long as you are already an SLA member)

Who are we? We are a dynamic group of individuals who are dedicated to bringing quality programming, networking, and ideas to our membership. In 2022, the SLA Illinois board has accomplished the following:

    • Acted as co-host for the 2022 SLA Midwest Symposium. 100 people registered for this event and over 80 people participated live.
    • Hosted an online trivia event
    • Hosted a book club discussion of the book Maus by Art Spiegelman
    • Collaborated with in-state student community to offer Career Day presentation
    • Hosted a virtual tour of the Adler Planetarium
    • Co-hosted a virtual webinar with Chicago Area Archivists
    • Hosted three local dine-arounds in the Chicago area
    • Hosted a virtual discussion with author/illustrator Annika Orrock

In addition to this, SLA Illinois had 3 members recognized for SLA awards this year:

    • Eugene Giudice, SLA Fellow
    • Barbara Kern, SLA Fellow
    • Valerie Moore, SLA Rising Star

We're not just trying to expand what it means to be an SLA Illinois board member, we're also trying to create new ties to organizations around our region and beyond. In 2023, we hope to grow our relationships with other Midwest communities. We also hope to partner with communities beyond the Midwest to bring in more speakers with national and international profiles.

Benefits to becoming an SLA Illinois board member:

    • Support to attend the annual conference (for elected positions only)
    • Opportunity to network with colleagues around the region
    • Chance to practice leadership skills and gain new ideas

Want to know more? You can look through our position description document (see attached) or watch our recent SLA Illinois Leadership Forum archived session. Please respond by filling out our interest form by Friday, September 30, 2022. Thanks!
