Title: Focusing Skills, Passion, and Connections to Enhance a Career

Description: When John Kromer left his Ph.D. program in chemistry, little did he know that what he saw as his greatest failure in life would eventually lead to far more happiness and success in a career in science librarianship. John will share how his career has progressed from science librarianship to academic library leadership, how he leveraged his SLA connections and leadership into management experience, and how he has used his subject expertise to enhance his strategic planning.

Bio: John Kromer is the Associate University Librarian for Research and Engagement at New Jersey Institute of Technology, a position he began in February 2022. Previously he was the STEM Division Head in the Arizona State University Library, the Physical Sciences Librarian at Brown University, and the Physical Science & Engineering Librarian at Miami University. John received an MA in Library and Information Studies and an MS in Chemistry, both from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and a BA in Chemistry and French Language & Literature from Transylvania University in Lexington, KY. John was the 2019 Chair of the Physics-Astronomy-Mathematics Division of the Special Libraries Association (SLA), and he currently co-chairs the PAM Industry Partners Committee. He is a member of the Membership Advisory Council and Grants & Foundations Task Force of SLA and was named a 2017 SLA Rising Star. John has published and presented on information literacy and collection evaluation in chemistry, deploying Open Educational Resources in a first-year engineering course, and electronic research notebooks.
