Title: Leveraging Your Professional Association Membership to Make You Better at Your Job
You're probably asking "what's in it for me?" as you ponder membership in a professional association. Sure, the educational content is useful, the conferences and meetings are a good place to learn, but isn't all that content available on the web? Heather would like to share how her participation in various professional associations has helped her be better at her job.
Heather Kotula is Access Innovations' Vice President of Marketing and Communications, directing activities including trade shows, conferences, online and social media, and corporate identity. While she enjoys all aspects of her job, she admits that her secret favorite is choosing swag to give away at conferences.
She is active in the Special Libraries Association, having served as the Taxonomy Community president, president-elect, and membership committee chair. She spearheaded the merger of the Rio Grande and Arizona chapters to form the Route 66 Community and served as president, secretary, and just finished serving as president-elect for a second time. She was a member of the Annual Conference Advisory Council for 2020 and is a member of the ACAC again for 2022. She is also active in the Society for Scholarly Publishing, serving on the Marketing Committee and as liaison to the Membership Committee.
In her spare time, she enjoys gourmet cooking, paper and fiber arts, reading trashy romance novels, sci-fi, and professional development books, and binge watching sci-fi.
