  • 1.  19thC Supreme Court- availability of supporting briefs?

    Posted 08-09-2022 12:45
    Hi -

My name is Becky Milton and I am fairly new to Legal librarianship, having spent a majority of my career in business/corporate research.

Currently, I am working on a request involving a 19thC (1846) Supreme Court decision.  While I can find the decision itself, my client is also interested in the underlying briefs submitted by the parties, if even available.  I see that type of content for more recent decisions, however, for this historical decision, I am not sure if (a) that content was even written and (b) if written, if it is available in any format (electronic or print).

    Thanks -
    Becky

Thanks to all who reached out and offered assistance.  My client was thrilled with the results.

If it ever comes up for anyone else, of course there is a database:

The Making of Modern Law:  U.S. Supreme Court Records and Briefs, 1832-1978

    https://www.gale.com/c/making-of-modern-law-us-supreme-court-records-and-briefs-1832-1978

    Here's the Supreme Court's Guide:

Supreme Court – Where to Find Briefs

    And LC's:

    Thanks again -
    Becky
