Life Sciences Librarian, Librarian I or II
Salary
$54,000 minimum. Salary is negotiable.
Position Summary
The Michigan State University Libraries (MSUL) is seeking a Life Sciences Librarian to serve as liaison to the Departments of Integrative Biology, encompassing diverse areas of life sciences from neuroscience to wildlife conservation; Entomology, including the community facing MSU Bug House; and graduate programs including 'Ecology, Evolution, and Behavior' and 'Genetics and Genome Sciences'. As a member of the Sciences Team and reporting to the Sciences Coordinator, the Life Sciences Librarian will collaborate with library colleagues and partner with liaison units in providing library support for research, teaching and learning. Life science faculty at MSU are an innovative community of researchers and teachers both on campus and around the world, with a focus on global engagement to solve problems. MSU's extensive opportunities for teaching and learning in the field have been enhanced with the recently opened STEM Teaching and Learning Facility, which emphasizes the importance of classroom and laboratory spaces for gateway science courses, including life sciences. In support of these initiatives, the Libraries serves as a center of activity and engagement on campus, with librarians empowered to support both student development and transformative research activities.
The MSU Libraries are closely aligned with teaching and learning innovation on campus and are particularly interested in candidates who are engaged in or excited about innovative teaching methods, particularly as it relates to new and emerging technologies and digital scholarship. The successful candidate will be broadly focused and collaborative, building partnerships with faculty, students, researchers, and other library users. The librarian will participate approximately quarter-time in a secondary assignment based on the needs of the library and candidate interests. Some evening and weekend hours may be required. Essential duties include:
- Online, hybrid, and in classroom instruction within courses
- Research support and guidance
- Collection development in relevant disciplines
- Consultation and support around the creation, use, and storage of data and data sets as they relate to the life sciences
Librarians are appointed as regular faculty in the continuing appointment system. They are engaged in professional development and scholarly activities related to their position and serve on library and university committees as elected or assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
Master's degree in information or library science from a program accredited by the American Library Association. Excellent oral and written communication skills; outstanding interpersonal communication skills including the ability to be flexible in a dynamic and changing environment; exceptional commitment to patron and community engagement; ability to work enthusiastically and effectively with diverse faculty, students, and staff; ability to work collaboratively and independently; ability to prioritize and balance various unit needs; attention to detail; preparation and commitment to conducting independent scholarship consistent with a library faculty appointment; capacity and commitment to engage independently in continuing professional development.
Desired Qualifications
Background, interest, or coursework in an area of the life sciences. Experience in an academic library setting. Experience in or familiarity with managing data or developing data management plans.
