Call for nominations, MCLS Board of Directors

  • 1.  Call for nominations, MCLS Board of Directors

    Posted 06-16-2022 12:12

As the outgoing Special Library Representative for Michigan on the Board for the Midwest Collaborative for Library Services, I encourage MCLS Members who work in a corporate, nonprofit, law, medical, or specialized academic library in Michigan to submit an application to join the Board of Directors. I found my experience on the Board very rewarding and informative. It is also a great opportunity to network with librarians from different types of library organizations across Michigan and Indiana.  If you have any questions about MCLS or serving on the Board, feel free to reach out to me directly at jscheuhe@umich.edu. See announcement below.

Call for nominations to serve on the MCLS Board of Directors

The MCLS Nominating Committee seeks nominations from the membership for the following openings on the MCLS Board of Directors:

    • At-Large Representative (Indiana)
    • Public Library Representative (Indiana)
    • Academic Library Representative (Michigan)
    • Special Library Representative (Michigan)

Please note that the incumbent Board Representative in the Michigan Academic Library position is eligible to run for another three-year term.

Each seat has a three-year term, beginning Jan. 1, 2023, and expiring Dec. 31, 2025. The Board meets in person four times a year, in February, May, August, and November, and Board meetings alternate between Michigan and Indiana. The November meeting includes a two-day strategy retreat to review activity of the previous year, assess trends, and determine strategic changes to MCLS's services. Newly elected Board members are asked to attend the annual retreat. MCLS reimburses Board members for all direct meeting expenses.

The MCLS Board utilizes the Policy Governance Model developed by John and Miriam Carver. To learn more about Policy Governance, visit their website. New Board members will receive an orientation to Policy Governance prior to the Board retreat.

MCLS's members are also its owners. The Board represents your interests as owners. Through the nominating process, you have the opportunity to put forth the names of those who will define our Ends and Limits, both of which guide MCLS staff as they consider the following: (1) services that are provided, (2) products that are delivered, and (3) programs that are developed. To assist you in nominating candidates, read these sections from the Board's policy manual for an overview of the Board's work and responsibilities. Under MCLS's Bylaws Section 4.03, only designated Member Representatives or Alternates from MCLS member institutions may be nominated.

The slate of candidates will be chosen from the nominations, voted on by the current Board of Directors in August, and presented to the membership in early September.

If you are interested in serving on the Board of Directors or wish to submit the name of a nominee, please complete this form (https://forms.gle/pxjpPhRXFPxvt2sdA). Deadline for submission of names is 5pm Eastern (4pm Central) on Friday, July 15, 2022. If you would prefer to mail or fax your nomination, please send them to: MCLS Nominating Committee, 1407 Rensen Street, Lansing, MI 48910-3657.
