What is the Military Libraries Community (MLC)?

MLC's goal is to promote the profession both within our organizations and to the world at large and also to assist our members to continue professional development. We accomplish this through educational sessions at SLA Annual, sponsorship of our own annual Community meeting - the Military Libraries Training Workshop (MLTW), networking, committee participation, and social media.

MLC brings together members from all U.S. military services, Canadian Combined Armed Forces, international military services, DoD agencies, contractors, vendors, academic institutions and anyone with an interest in military librarianship.

Why should I join? What’s in it for me?

  • Get the inside track on employment opportunities at military installations and DoD organizations around the world.
  • Network with colleagues from all services; a small community which spans the globe.
  • Keep current with technology and trends.
  • Develop leadership skills by participating on committees and planning programs, moderating panels, or delivering presentations.
  • Receive a reduced rate to attend the annual Military Libraries Training Workshop.

What is MLTW?

The Military Libraries Training Workshop is an annual professional event of the Military Libraries Community. It began in 1957 at Air University, and every year since then has been hosted by a military installation. Recent ones have been at Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, AL, the US Naval Academy in Annapolis, Ft Leavenworth, KS, Wright-Patterson AFB in Ohio, and the Defense Technical Information Center in Fort Belvoir, VA.

MLC members receive a discount on Workshop registration, but it is open to all who have an interest in the military library community. The Workshop features nationally-known keynoters as well as high-quality programs which deal with issues pertinent to the military library community. This is the place to meet and network with your colleagues from all the services, to become involved by giving presentations, working on committees, or on other activities that help you to grow professionally in a supportive environment.

How can I join? How much does it cost?

Complete the SLA application and select MLC in the community section.
