Hi Everyone -
Please join us via webinar for our next free Department of the Interior Library Park Ranger Speaker Series lecture, entitled "Ulysses S. Grant at 200: Interpreting a Remarkable Life at the Ulysses S. Grant National Historic Site" on Tuesday, April 19th from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm ET.
While discussing Ulysses S. Grant's character in an interview, General William T. Sherman once remarked that Grant was a mystery to himself. Since 1989, the National Park Service has attempted to uncover this mystery by interpreting his life at Ulysses S. Grant National Historic Site in St. Louis, Missouri. The site manages White Haven, the childhood home of Grant's wife, Julia Dent Grant. White Haven was where Grant first met Julia, later living with his family at the home from 1854 to 1859. The home was also a place of enslavement, with the Dent family enslaving upwards of thirty African Americans before the Civil War. In this presentation, Park Ranger Nick Sacco will analyze Grant's life as a St. Louis farmer and his experiences while living at White Haven before the Civil War. He'll address some of the myths, stories, and realities of Grant's life while discussing the establishment of White Haven as a unit of the National Park Service in 1989.
