"Although there have been military libraries since shortly after the American Revolution, the modern Army Library Program began during World War I, when the Secretary of War established the War Library Service. ALA provided the initial service. Librarians have been going to war since World War I, and include World War II, Vietnam, Bosnia, Iraq, and Afghanistan.Book kits are sent to ships at sea, troops that are on exercises or deployed, troops in brigs or stockades, the Marines on Embassy duty around the world."
