    Hi Everyone -

Please join us for the next in our regular monthly series of free Department of the Interior Library Park Ranger Speaker Series lectures, entitled "The U.S. Navy Memorial" on Tuesday, October 8th from 1:00 - 1:45 pm ET in the Stewart Lee Udall Department of the Interior Building's John Muir Room.

Like most of our national monuments and memorials, the endeavors of many helped create the U.S. Navy Memorial. Rear Admiral William Thompson, USN (ret.) spearheaded those efforts, working to fulfill the vision Admiral Arleigh Burke had of a long overdue memorial to the Navy in Washington, DC. Thompson's combined background of service at sea and his talents as a public information officer promoting the Navy made him an effective leader in securing the talents and support of many artists, donors, and politicians. Dedicated in 1987 and located on Pennsylvania Avenue, N.W. (between 7th and 9th Streets), the U.S. Navy Memorial honors the brave men and women of the Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard and Merchant Marine – past, present and future.

Please join Park Ranger Michael Balis as he looks at one of the more recent additions to the monuments and memorials of Washington, DC, the U.S. Navy Memorial. Ranger Balis will discuss the impetus behind the drive to realize Admiral Burke's dream, the choice of its location, and the symbolism associated with its many features.
