    Hi Everyone -

Please join us for the next in our regular monthly series of free Department of the Interior Library Park Ranger Speaker Series lectures, entitled "The Great Crusade Sets Forth: Commemorating the 75th Anniversary of D-Day" on Tuesday, May 21st from 1:00 - 1:45 pm ET in the Stewart Lee Udall Department of the Interior Building's Rachel Carson Room.

Operations Overlord and Neptune, the Allied invasion of German-occupied Europe, began on June 6, 1944. On that day, now known as D-Day, some 156,000 American, British, Canadian, Free French and other Allied forces fought their way onto five beaches along a fifty-mile stretch of the heavily fortified coast of France's Normandy region. The landings at Omaha, Utah, Gold, June and Sword beaches were the largest amphibious military assault in history, requiring extensive planning by Allied Commanding General Dwight D. Eisenhower and his staff. The invasion to mark "the beginning of the end," as Winston Churchill once succinctly put it, was at hand. By late August 1944, all of northern France had been liberated, and by the following spring the Allies had defeated the Germans.

Please join Park Ranger Paul O'Brian as he takes a look back seventy-five years to D-Day, the commencement of the great crusade to free Europe from the grip of its Nazi oppressors. Ranger O'Brian will examine the events of that fateful day, recall the great sacrifices that were made, and remind us why D-Day is still important and significant to us today.
