Experimenting and Implementing Evidence-Based Selection Options for eBook Investments
The last 3 years have brought several changes to library collection strategies. Learn how user demand options, including evidence-based selection are gaining interest across institutions. Understand how libraries have been experimenting and with and implementing access models to improve how they select collections to meet the needs of end users. Evidenced-Based Selection (EBS) is an eBook collection model that puts the control in the hands of the users and allows the library to make strategic decisions based on overall unrestricted, 12-month usage.
During this panel discussion, eBook experts and librarians will share insights on how these options fit into library requirements. These experts will provide their perspective on how library decisions have evolved since the pandemic and how EBS has enabled greater flexibility in content decision making.

- Andrée Rathemacher, University of Rhode Island
 Andrée Rathemacher is Head, Acquisitions in the University Libraries at the University of Rhode Island, where she manages the materials budget of over $5.1 million and is responsible for the purchase and licensing of library materials in all formats and the management of electronic resources. An advocate of scholarly communication reform, she is active in promoting open access initiatives at the University of Rhode Island. She currently serves as the co-Chair of NISO's KBART Standing Committee.
- Liz Mengel, Johns Hopkins University
 Liz Mengel is Associate Dean Collections and Academic Services at Johns Hopkins University. As the Associate Dean, Liz concentrates on the development of strategies for long term sustainable collections while delivering services to Johns Hopkins' patrons that focus on supporting research and teaching.
Penning several articles around library practices, collaborative assessment, performance measurement and organizational issues, Liz has become a powerful voice of the library community. Participating in several panel presentations that focus on the value of the academic library, institutional goals and industry change, Liz takes qualitative action to put the interests of the library and patrons first. Liz is a staple in the library community is a member of several professional Committees and Advisory Boards.
- Melissa Milazzo, Elsevier
 Melissa Milazzo is Senior Product Manager at Elsevier. She manages business model development for Research Reference books on ScienceDirect, collaborating with librarians to ensure book content is made available in the models that best fit the needs of today's academic libraries. As an advocate of innovation in publishing, she is passionate about re-imagining how we view and value digital content as well exploring all the possibilities offered by online platforms.
- Robert Tiessen, University of Calgary Library
 Robert Tiessen is Collections Librarian at the University of Calgary Libraries & Cultural Resources. Book acquisitions is a major part of his responsibilities. He has worked at the University of Calgary Library in various roles since 1999 after moving back to Canada from working as a librarian in Montana and Ohio.
