In 2021, Dr. Jessica Sheets was hired to rebuild Marine Corps History Division’s Oral History Program, which had been dormant for two years due to a retirement. In this presentation, she will describe History Division’s efforts to develop the new program, her responsibilities as the only civilian oral historian at HD, coordination with the Field Historians of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve, and more. She will also share experiences of conducting oral history interviews with active duty Marine Corps general officers.
Dr. Jessica Sheets is the Oral Historian at Marine Corps History Division. She was hired away from the Army in September 2021, after working at the U.S. Army Heritage and Education Center (USAHEC) as a federal employee since December 2007. At USAHEC, she started as a Library Technician (after working at a library while in college), then an Archives Technician, then an Archivist, and finally a Research Historian. She started her PhD work while a GS-7 Archives Tech, in an effort to get into her desired career path as a historian. She defended her dissertation in American Studies at Penn State University - Harrisburg in December 2019. She considers her current position a dream job she did not know existed.
