I am currently University Librarian Emerita from the University of Southern California. This is the highest rank achievable at the university for a librarian and was not based on an administrative title but is a faculty rank. I served as a line librarian, a Head Librarian, as Assistant Director, and recently completed a short stint as co-Associate Dean for Collections after retirement to assist during a research leave of a colleague in that division.
I worked in public services most of the time (reference, research, instruction) and in collection development.
I was fortunate to be able to serve SLA as President of the Southern California Chapter 1999-2000; Chair of the Biomedical and Life Sciences Division 2009; and Chair of the Marketing Section of the Leadership & Management Division 2014-15, in addition to being chair or committee member for multiple SLA units.
For my other international professional organization (IAMSLIC), I served as Website & Communications Committee Chair 2011-2015, again with many other committee assignments in the organization.
I was a presenter at multiple conferences, both refereed and invited, published multiple articles, and was a Library Journal reviewer from 1985 to date.
I loved being a librarian and taking that opportunity to learn something new every day.
In retirement my husband and I have added to our travels and have now been to every continent with Antarctica our first trip after I retired. It was gorgeous but go as young as you can, as it was a very physical trip. the next year was the Galapagos, also beautiful and very physical. We're still traveling and are happy we planned as well and that our health is good so we can continue visiting new places and returning to favorites.
