September 26, 2023
Keynote – 3pm to 4pm
Presented by Jonathan Torres, Business and Data Services Librarian, Rutgers University, Newark
The Convergence of AI Technologies, Librarianship, and Higher Education: A Strategic Approach to Understanding Artificial Intelligence and Developing Innovative Pedagogical Practices

The impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) generative models on college students' learning and research methods is undeniable. In higher education, this technological advancement has significantly transformed pedagogical practices, leading to a new challenge for educators: distinguishing between AI assistance and students' course assignments. As a result, librarians and educators must ask themselves: How can higher education stay ahead of these recent changes in students' information-seeking behavior?

This presentation aims to emphasize the importance of accountability in information curation with AI platforms. We will discuss effective pedagogical strategies that showcase the capabilities and limitations of ChatGPT, Bard, and other AI platforms. Furthermore, I will share how I have utilized AI platforms to teach business data and information literacy through real-life case studies that differentiate credible and non-credible information sources. The presentation stresses the significance of academic librarians and the entire field of library and information science staying abreast of the latest AI technology in higher education.
Jonathan is the Business and Data Services Librarian specializing in teaching data and information literacy and statistical and data visualization software. He provides course-integrated and resource-specific instruction in business-based subject areas, develops, and delivers data-related workshops, and offers consultative support such as finding data sets, assisting with data analysis software, and data management planning for universities, government, and external organizations. Mr. Torres received an M.S. in library and information science and an M.A. and B.A. in labor studies and employment relations from Rutgers University-New Brunswick. Mr. Torres is a LEADING Fellow for the LIS Education and Data Science Integrated Network Group (LEADING) program.
Jonathan is an accomplished keynote speaker who has presented at both national and international conferences for his research on bibliometrics and pedagogical practices utilizing AI-generated models, which has been published in peer-reviewed publications such as the Science & Technology Libraries and the Journal of Business & Finance Librarianship.
