Anthony Troncale leads a discussion on the Picture Collection of the New York Public Library, in the Manuscripts and Archives Division at NYPL, the principle source of texts for the book Words on Pictures.
Jessica Cline, New York Public Library Supervising Librarian, Picture Collection New York, will speak about the collection.
We will hear a recording of Romana Javitz with Robert Yampolsky. Javitz had a long history of supporting, documenting and advocating for African-Americans. Javitz's was co-founder (along with Elsie Phillips of Enoch Pratt Free Library, Baltimore, MD) of its Picture Division and editor of its newsletter, Picturescope from 1953-1960.
Photo-historian Mary Panzer will speak about Javitz's friendship with Arturo Schomburg and her outreach activities to the Harlem community throughout her 40 year tenure at NYPL.
Dr. Diana Kamin, teaches at Fordham University, will discuss her study of the Picture Collection as part of her soon to be published dissertation (NYU 2018), Picture Work: On the Circulating Image Collection. (MIT Press).
