    Organization: NYC Department of Social Services:

    Position: Library Assistant

    Location: Manhattan

    The NYC Department of Social Services Library is seeking applications for the position of Library Assistant. The assignment is for one year from January 1, 2020 through December 31, 2020 at an hourly rate of $28.00. The position is full-time, Monday through Friday (9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.)

    This is an excellent opportunity for a new professional or library school student to gain practical experience.

    Under direction with considerable latitude for independent action or decision, perform difficult and responsible administrative/analytical work as Library Assistant to support the Library Director. Duties include, but not limited to the following: 

    • Provide support to overall functionality of the library, with emphasis on day-to-day operations (including, but not limited to stacking books, sorting mail, processing and labeling materials, liaison to building services).
    • Distribute, collect, and ensure proper documentation of circulating materials to and from patrons.
    • Data entry (for example, patron records, walk-in counts, subscription actions log).
    • Prepare paperwork needed for purchasing and receiving of books, periodicals, and other materials.
    • Order, distribute and maintain department-wide inventory of office supplies.
    • File new documents and maintain the subject and internal vertical files ensuring that the finding guides are up to date.
    • Assist library director with research projects, cataloging, and other library functions. 

    Qualifications:

    • Degree or coursework in Library Science or related field such as, but not limited to computer science, information science, research, and data science.
    • Experience with online systems and databases (e.g. OPAC-Online Public Access Catalogs)
    • Above average web and literature search skills
    • Excellent customer service skills
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills
    • Significant experience with Microsoft applications (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint)
    • Ability to work independently

    Students: Completion of fundamental courses in library and information science.
