Date: Saturday, June 8, 2019Time: 10:30am - 12:30pmLocation: Meet at 10:15am at the Northeast corner of 111th Street and Lexington Avenue opposite the mural of Nicholasa MohrThe many colorful murals and mosaics of East (Spanish) Harlem reveal a great deal about the history, culture, and politics of this neighborhood and its residents. Some include lush scenes of the Caribbean islands and of Mexico, where many members of this community come from. Others are dedicated to accomplished citizens of New York, such as Julia de Burgos, who were associated with East Harlem, and still others to famous people world-wide, such as Che Guevara and Frida Kahlo. Some of the murals and mosaics have strong political messages. A number of the gifted artists received commissions from the City of New York as part of projects to add more murals to the community. The walk will end at Lexington Avenue and 100th Street.
