Volunteer for the NY Chapter Board

Board members are expected to attend a monthly Board meeting as well as major events of the Chapter. These positions are part of the Executive Board, along with the current President, Past President, and Communications Chair and hold the authority to vote at Board meetings.

President-Elect | 3-year commitment | 1-Year term each as President-Elect, President, and Past President

During President-Elect Year
  • Learns as much as possible about the operation of the Chapter.
  • Substitutes for the Chapter President.
  • Recruits Advisory Board members to serve during his/her presidency.
  • Should attend the meeting of the Chapter Cabinet held during the Association's annual conference, and periodic reporting responsibilities to SLA headquarters.
While President
  • Set strategy and vision for the chapter.
  • Works with related organizations to co-host events.
  • Defines event-related milestones and methods for managing them.
  • Finds creative methods to keep volunteers informed and engaged.
  • Collaborates with the Treasurer and Sponsorship Chair to manage financial AND legal affairs.
  • Should attend the meeting of the Chapter Cabinet held during the Association's annual conference, and periodic reporting responsibilities to SLA headquarters.
As Past President
  • Undertake special projects at the request of the President.
Approximate time commitment per week: 2-10 hours minimum

Secretary | 1-year term

  • To record and distribute minutes of the Chapter's business meetings, including the annual business meeting.
  • To conduct official correspondence and maintain a file of current records as requested by the Chapter President.
  • Periodic reporting responsibilities to SLA headquarters.
  • At the end of the Association year, archival material should be transferred to the Chapter archivist.
  • Serve as a member of the Chapter Executive Board.
Approximate time commitment per month: 5-10 hours

Treasurer | 2-year term

  • Maintains the chapter's bank account and finances, including receipt of event registrations, and other income.
  • Monitors monthly expenditures.
  • Provides guidance and counsel regarding major expenses.
  • Provides expense reimbursement for speakers and chapter volunteers.
  • Pays vendor invoices for chapter expenses.
  • Prepares quarterly reports.
  • Prepares, signs, and submits an audited annual financial statement for each fiscal year to the Association website.
  • Prepares the Chapter's budget in consultation with the President and other Chapter leaders.
  • Periodic reporting responsibilities to SLA headquarters.
Approximate time commitment per month: 10-15 hours.

Professional Development Chair | 2-year term

  • Works with the Executive Board and the Advisory Board to select programs and locations.
  • Supervises detailed plans for each program. Arranges for speakers, panelists, exhibitors, films, etc.
  • Creates a budget for the program, in conjunction with the Treasurer, and works with the Sponsorship Chair on soliciting sponsorships for the program.
  • Works with the Communications Committee to announce and publicize meetings.
  • Reports on each meeting to the Board.
