SLA Philadelphia Chapter’s Knower Fund was established in 1978 in memory of long-time member, Beverly M. Knower, who served the chapter in many capacities, including a term as president. The Fund was intended to reflect her abiding interest in encouraging students to consider careers in special libraries. The fund is currently used to support activities that acquaint students with the benefits of participation in SLA. One key program of this fund is the Beverly M. Knower Fund Conference Travel Award. Awarded to chapter members enrolled in an ALA-accredited MLIS/MLS graduate school program, this travel award helps cover the expenses of attending the SLA Annual Conference. Past recipients of the Knower Awards have found much value in attending the conference.
Funds for the Knower Fund come from ongoing contributions by SLA Philadelphia Chapter members through:
- individual donations to the endowment,
- donations given during chapter events,
- proceeds from chapter fundraising efforts.
