The North Carolina Biotechnology Center (NCBiotech) seeks a Vice President to lead two critical functions of the Center. The right person will have a unique combination of emotional intelligence, strategic thinking, and leadership skills.
The VP, Business Intelligence and Analytics (VPBIA) requires a candidate who:
- has the marketing sense and customer service savvy of a business owner;
- understands the critical role of information management and the application of traditional library skills to new businesses;
- is seasoned in personnel management, budgets and planning.

The VPBIA is responsible for activities that are both internally and externally facing.
- Externally, this role has oversight of the organization's Life Science Intelligence (LSI) team which provides competitive intelligence, market analysis, and other research in the life science industry. This includes providing contract-based services to multinational corporations as well as providing services to new entrepreneurs to support their efforts to start and grow a company.
- Internally, the Impact Research Team (IRT) is responsible for supporting Center staff through data management operations and information tracking of the Center's impact across multiple program areas. This team provides system administration for Center applications, including but not limited to a client-relationship management system, a digital asset management system and the Center's intranet. In addition, this team provides technical oversight of the Center's website.
About NCBiotech
The North Carolina Biotechnology Center is a private, state-funded non-profit that has a mission to create North Carolina's competitive advantage in the life sciences, engaging partners, maximizing opportunities, and delivering solutions to accelerate innovation, investment, and job creation.
This role will be based at the NCBiotech Center in Research Triangle Park, NC and on-site work is expected 50% of the time in accordance with the Center's established remote/hybrid work guidelines.
Supervisory Responsibilities
The VP is responsible for recruiting, hiring, training, directing, motivating, reviewing, and supervising this unit. The incumbent leads a team of professionals with diverse qualifications. Staff may possess various types of degrees such as library sciences, information technology, data analytics, and other relevant degrees.
The VP directly supervises four people:
- Director, LSI
- Director, IRT
- Program Manager
- Electronic Resources Manager
Essential Duties
- Contributes to the NCBiotech corporate strategy and coordination by:
- Representing LSI and IRT to the Center and to external partners and clients.
- Contributes to corporate strategy, planning and execution.
- Partners with the Director, IT in a collaborative and consultative manner to inform strategic decisions regarding IT platforms for Center staff and specific teams.
- Coordinates research efforts among Center projects
- Provides strategic direction and leadership to the LSI team and the IRT as follows:
With LSI –
- Monitors, grows & markets the business of LSI
- Develops products and services that increase the value of LSI to the life sciences community;
- Establishes and supervises alliances with client companies;
- Negotiates contracts within signature authority. Assures all legal documents are appropriate and brings questions to the attention of the appropriate person (Senior VP, VP Finance, CEO, or external legal team).
IRT -
- Ensures the reliability & functionality of the NCBiotech official website.
- Ensures the Center's metrics are maintained with integrity, are reported, or shared frequently and are revised annually.
- Ensures data in diverse systems are integrated wherever possible to maximize their utility.
- Ensure the client relationship management system is effectively managed to meet staff needs.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Demonstrated success in visionary leadership, goal setting and implementation for a complex technical organization. Must be able to articulate a clear vision for the unit in a fast-paced, rapidly changing environment.
Must have a passion for excellent customer service and commitment to exceptional quality.
Demonstrated success in recruitment, retention, mentoring, management, and leadership of staff. Ability to build and maintain a high-performance team and foster a positive, inclusive, collaborative work environment that leverages the skills and abilities of all levels of staff. Demonstrated success in building effective teams.
Creative problem solver with a demonstrated ability to find solutions to complex problems involving multiple teams across the Center and external to it, as appropriate.
Highly skilled communicator capable of effectively presenting complex ideas on-stage or in smaller business settings with an ability to effectively analyze and summarize information and respond to inquiries.
Experience with current standards of end-user computer technologies, including cloud-based software and services with a focus on creating client-focused platforms. High familiarity with standards on usability and security in an environment that often demands confidentiality.
Education and Experience Requirements
Preferred - Master's degree in library sciences, information technology, data analytics, or a related field. Ten years of experience in progressively responsible positions. At least three years of supervision and management. Experience in a medical or special library.
Minimum - Bachelor's degree in library sciences, information technology, data analytics, or a related field. Fifteen years of experience in progressively responsible positions. At least five years of supervision and management. Experience as a system administrator, server, or network administrator a positive.
Salary and Benefits
Anticipated Hiring Range: $126,000-$150,000
Salary commensurate with experience. Benefits offered include generous contribution to retirement (with no match required), 23 days of vacation available annually, in addition to 10 holidays and a floating holiday of your choosing. Generous sick, bereavement and volunteer leave are also provided. The Center has a commitment to continuous learning and development, with employees expected to spend 5% of their time in learning and development activities.
