  • 1.  MLA/SLA 2023 Conference - First time attendee recommendations

    Hi, 

    I am attending the MLA/SLA 2023 conference next week. I am new to SLA and this is my first time attending either a MLA or SLA conference (although I have been to a couple other library conferences). Unfortunately, I cannot attend the first time attendees breakfast based on flight/hotel availability when I booked. I was curious if anyone had any recommendations for a first time attendee? Or was anyone interested in meeting up for coffee?

    Hi Ann,

     

    I'd be happy to meet up with you! Before you step on that plane, however, there are a few recommendations I would like to share. I hope others will chime in as well.

     

    1. Wear shoes that are comfortable for a lot of walking.
    2. Hydrate hydrate hydrate.
    3. Bring snacks – the food concessions aren't always convenient in convention centers.
    4. If you haven't traveled for a while, try on the clothes you plan to pack. Things may have changed!
    5. Bring a good quantity of business cards.
    6. Assume you're welcome at everything unless it is specified otherwise somewhere.
    7. Stop by the SLA community tables in the exhibit hall and talk to the people there.
    8. If you have a question, someone else probably has the same one. Ask it!
    9. Bring a jacket or sweater. It's often cold in the session rooms and you want to be as comfortable as possible so you can focus on learning.
    10. Don't miss the dance party! 6:00 p.m., in the Grand Riverview A & B room at the convention center.
