IASSIST Africa Regional Workshop at Makerere University, Kampala, Uganda
Theme: "Data Literacy as a catalyst for achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
Introduction
The International Association for Social Science Information Service and Technology (IASSIST) is an international organization of professionals working with information technology and data services to support research and teaching in the social sciences. IASSIST has a membership of over 300 from Academia, Government, Non-profit sector, Private sector. The membership includes; Information specialists, Data librarians, Reference librarians, Technology professionals, and Data archivists. IASSIST in collaboration with the East African School of Library and Information Science (EASLIS), Makerere University and Association of Parliamentary Libraries of Eastern and Southern Africa (APLESA) will be hosting the First IASSIST Africa Regional Workshop at Makerere University, Kampala, Uganda from 21st - 23rd October, 2020.
In this workshop, data literacy is aligned to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) since the application and utilization of quality data significantly contribute to the attainment of the SDGs. We, therefore, welcome research papers, posters and related presentations focusing on the different strategies that can be applied in using data to achieve the SDGs.
The Sub-themes for the workshop papers may include:
- Data literacy integration into development agenda
- Approaches to data literacy education
- Statistical literacy
- Data mining
- Trans Literacy in achieving SDGs
- Open Data and open science trends and experiences
- Big Data
- Research Data Management
Qualifying papers shall be published electronically after a double-blind peer-review process. For authors who wish to publish their papers in a reputable journal, IASSIST has a journal called IASSIST IQ. Authors with papers which meet the journals' standard are welcome to publish there.
Paper Format
All submissions should include the proposed title, author(s) names, contacts and institutional affiliations in New Times Roman, font size 12, 1.5 spacing on A4 portrait.
The abstract should not be any longer than 300 words and must include: the purpose of the paper; the central argument, an indication of methodology, results and/or conclusions and, implication and 3-5 keywords.
The full papers should not be longer than 15 pages or 3000-5000 words including Title of paper, Name(s) of author(s), Institutional Affiliation, phone contact and Email address.
Poster Sessions
Posters that also address issues in the workshop the theme will be accepted for presentation.

Deadlines:
Deadline for Submission; 30th April 2020
Authors of accepted Abstracts and Posters will be notified on 31st May 2020.
Full papers and electronic versions of posters will be accepted to be submitted by 30th June 2020.

The costs for travel, accommodation, and incidentals shall be the responsibility of the participants. In other words, participants are expected to make their own accommodation arrangements. More information pertaining to alternative accommodation will be shared in due course.
The workshop local organizing Committee will facilitate invitation letters to interested participants who might require them while process permission from their institutions of affiliation and acquiring entry visas to Uganda.
