    The National Gallery of Art is seeking applicants for a librarian to join the Technical Services department as a monographs cataloger and metadata specialist.

    The primary purpose of the position is to provide descriptive and subject cataloging, original and copy, for monographs in English and foreign languages. Additionally, the incumbent will be responsible for bringing vision and implementation to metadata projects that will expand access to all library collections, and to identify opportunities within relationships to other NGA collections and related collections of other institutions.

    The incumbent contributes to the effectiveness and efficiency of the research and educational activities of National Gallery of Art by providing complete, accurate, and timely access to monographic publications in the Library's collection, as well as enhancing existing descriptive access elements. The incumbent works collaboratively within the library to extend and enhance access to and augment connections between collection items.

    Qualifications:
    Candidates must possess at least one year of specialized experience, equivalent in responsibility to the federal GS-7 level, cataloging library materials published in Western European languages and familiarity with, and willingness to develop deep knowledge of, relevant and employable principles and technologies that analyze, enhance, and leverage collection data. Additionally, candidates must demonstrate:

    ·         Professional knowledge of and experience with interpreting and applying Library of Congress descriptive cataloging, subject cataloging and classification principles and the National Gallery of Art variations from these principles.

    ·         Professional knowledge of cataloging standards and principles such as MARC21, RDA, AACR2, LCSH, authority control practices, and a variety of descriptive vocabularies and thesauri related to arts and the humanities.

    ·         Professional knowledge of online cataloging systems, bibliographic utilities, and library services platforms.

     

    Other Relevant Eligibility Criteria:

    ·         Familiarity with, and willingness to develop deep knowledge of, relevant and employable principles and technologies that analyze, enhance, and leverage collection data such as: linked data concepts, XML, CCO, and fair use as it applies to images and metadata, and data manipulation tools such as MARCEdit or OpenRefine.

    ·         Skill in achieving cooperation, consensus, and support for changes in metadata as a result of standardization or for recommended library policy changes related to metadata.

    ·         Ability to manage time and projects of varying scale and complexity effectively.

    ·         Academic background in art history or studio arts.

    ·         Demonstrated ability to work with multi-lingual materials.
