Alexandria: The Journal of National and International Library and Information Issues

    Call for Editor/s

For thirty years, Alexandria has published engaging work on national and international library and information issues. Published in association with the British Library, the journal focuses on national and major research libraries, and other associated topics such as information planning, bibliographic networks, open access, open data and digitization. Alexandria also features discussion papers on collection development, national retention and preservation policies, the promotion of national library services, library architecture and the response of national and major research libraries to the digital environment.

After many years of leading the journal forward, Editor Monica Blake stepped down at the end of 2019. Acting Editor Martyn Wade is seeking to hand over editorship in summer 2020. A single Editor or team of two or more co-Editors will be considered.

The journal is published three times a year in print and online at

    Responsibilities of the editorship include:

    • Contributing to the strategic development of the Journal
    • Actively commissioning content and exercising responsibility for the selection of submitted articles
    • Managing the receipt of submissions, liaising with authors, and editing articles. The Editor/s review papers and are responsible for content quality and relevance (More information on the journal's peer review policy can be found here). For select articles which are peer reviewed, the Editor is responsible for the receipt and peer-review of scholarly submissions
    • Managing and developing the Editorial Board and Editorial Advisors
    • Liaison with SAGE Publishing, ensuring the delivery of copy according to agreed production schedules
    • Representing the Journal and promoting it when possible, with the support of SAGE

Applications are welcomed from experienced library and information professionals who are well networked. Ideally applicants should have expertise and experience in national collection institutions as well as experience of editing. They should be able to demonstrate a current appreciation of the issues that those working in national libraries face and the trends influencing these. Both those working in the relevant sectors and those with academic experience are welcome to apply.

The new editorial position will be available from July 2020, though can be available earlier if the chosen applicant is looking to start sooner, and a handover period will take place to ensure a smooth transition. There is an initial commitment of three years.

SAGE invites expressions of interest by Monday 16th March. Those interested in making an application should send a brief CV supported by a letter that outlines their experience and ability to perform the role. Expressions should specifically address the applicants' aims and vision for the Journal over the term of editorship.

All enquiries and expressions of interest should be directed via email in the first instance to:
