Excel remains the incubator for many taxonomies, and some content management systems have basic taxonomy features. However, if you need additional functionality such as customized relationships, auto-categorization and taxonomy use in multiple applications, there are a surprising array of tools, modules, features and functionalities to consider. How do you know what you need? How do you avoid buying too much, or too little, functionality? Join us for a roundup of the state of the technology related to controlled vocabularies and how to evaluate tools based on your requirements and constraints (including technology, time, resources and money).

Speakers:

Marti Heyman, is currently Executive Director Metadata Strategy & Operations at OCLC in Dublin Ohio. She has extensive and diverse experience utilizing information science techniques and methodologies to develop effective, sustainable solutions to meet the information, content, and knowledge management needs of a broad range of organizations, including manufacturing, e-business, professional services, enterprise software, publishing, and library data & services. She earned her MLIS and MBA degrees from Drexel University in Philadelphia, where she has been an adjunct professor teaching courses on content representation and management of information organizations.

Heather Hedden is Senior Vocabulary Editor, Gale, A Cengage Company, and author of The Accidental Taxonomist. At Gale, she edits the subject thesaurus for Gale research databases and develops discipline taxonomies for the management of content for Cengage online educational resources. She also provides taxonomy consulting through her own business, Hedden Information Management, designing taxonomies for both web and internal content management. Heather teaches an online course in taxonomy creation and gives several conference presentations and workshops each year. She has been involved in indexing and controlled vocabulary standards and is currently the North American representative/editor for the Basel Register of Thesauri, Ontologies & Classifications.
